Ask The Experts – Summer dress styling with Laura Mullett

Now Summer is here we all need a little styling inspiration – we caught up with stylist, fashion editor and broadcaster Laura Mullett to get the lowdown on how to make the most of our favourite print dresses for the seasons ahead …

What are the biggest trends you predict for high summer into autumn this year?

Maximalism has boldly taken centre stage and geometric prints with a 70s feel will be prevalent. Strong tailoring, bodysuits, defined shoulders and pastels such as lavender with texture are set to be bang on trend for AW21. Power dressing, dark denim flares, duvet coat puffers, opulent knitwear and unconventional colour pairings are also the trend led fashionable route. Due to the more sedentary lifestyles we have all been leading the roaring twenties revival is pending so the motto will be “go glam or go home!”

What is the best style of dress for women with a bigger bust?

A sweetheart or V neckline will cradle your bust in a flattering fashion. By opting for boatneck or high necked variations you will draw more attention to your cleavage. Usually, the secret to your dresses looking perky and perfect is ensuring you’re wearing the right cup size in your bra and that it’s sitting right at the small of your back and not cutting in.

What style of dress would you recommend for petite women?

Skater styles look feminine and fabulous on petite women. Opting for acidic or primary coloured brights is on trend and the fluted knee grazing fall of a skater dress is ideal for elongating the leg.

What colour dresses do you predict to be huge this summer?

Dark based florals are immensely popular. They can be effortlessly dressed up and down and are a transeasonal way of incorporating colour, alternatively, shades like brick red, coral, fuchsia, cyan and bright green bases are very popular this year as we all endeavour to shake up our seasonal style.

How do you style midi-length dresses so they don’t make you look shorter?

Footwear neutrality is key. Think of tonal shading that blends in with your skin shade, elevation of course will add elegance as well as height. If you prefer lower options, opt for a flatform in earthy tones that won’t detract from your ensemble. Midis with a slit for movement work well too as they show a sliver of your pins! You can have your Angelina Jolie red carpet moment!

What style of dress is the most office-appropriate for going back to work?

You can’t go wrong with a floral wrap midi, a lacy cami to frame your chest and a longline blazer to add some tailored chic. Belting the blazer and adding a block heeled mule will insert some relaxed glamour.

What length dress works best with flats/runners, for a more casual look?

I think a midaxi is the way to go! It’s in between a midi and a maxi as the name suggests and it looks trendy with a biker jacket or cool print cardi and everyday athleisure footwear.

What style of dress would you recommend for taller women?

Halter neck maxis with a slit look incredibly chic on a taller woman. The halter neck shows off the décolletage and frames the upper body, with an elasticated waist or belted detailing the empire line is showcased while the dress has a fluid chic fall! Win win!

What style of dress is appropriate for a summer wedding/communion/christening?

A dress can feel like a safer bet as opposed to separates as it’s one garment, you zip up and go. Conservative and classy occasions call for a balance between looking smart and adhering to your personal taste. I feel a safe bet is go for floatiness, a midi or a maxi, arm framing and waist cinching. Make sure the neckline won’t be a hassle or need adjusting, wear a print or block colour reflective of the time of year and your mood. It’s important to experiment and aim to go for a shade that is not only complimentary to your skin tone but that you would love to wear again! A sustainable approach to occasion wear styling is the way to go.

How can you style a dress to cover your arms, but not be too hot in the summer months?

I know this can feel like a mine field and stress people out but my advice is to be braver in your styling choices. For example, if you’re wanting to wear a slip dress or sleeveless maxi dress then opt for a semi sheer kimono or beach cover up to finish the look. Beach shirts are handy styling layering tools and look incredible with more statement styles, gold jewelry and a red lip. A cover up doesn’t have to be dated – just make sure to be comfortable and don’t swaddle your shape. Celebrate your swerves and curves!

So now you you’ve got some expert pointers, all you need to do now is find your perfect print dress for a summer of effortless styling – happy shopping!
